I have a 3GS running 4.0.2 (I know, i'm an idiot)...and i want to downgrade to 4.0.1. I'm seeing "you can just download the 4.0.1" everywhere, but no indication of how?

    finally found it...

Um... we have one of those too. It's the huge button in the top toolbar that says "Downloads"... then proceed to the "Firmware" page.

We didn't allow firmware downloading from MMi in the not too distant past did we? Seems like I remember being told to use google because MMi "didn't allow the downloading of copyrighted works" or something like that. Are firmwares not copyright protected?

Oh and to the OP. I hope know it's not just as simple as downloading a FW and simply clicking restore in iTunes. There are steps that have to be taken to insure it will work. Like having your SHSH stored on the Cydia server and pointing your host file towards the Cydia server.

We don't host Pwned Firmwares which are /modified/ copyrighted material. It's a gray area. We have linked/hosted Official Firmwares since day 1.

some of the other posts i've read lead me to believe that apple is still signing 4.0.1 so a simple restore would still work?

Oh ok thanks for clearing that up.
@bcamp: if that's true then yes, a simple click of the restore button in iTunes will suffice. But, you better hurry because they won't be signing 4.0.1 for too much longer!

FYI, the restore worked for me. I did switch my hosts file to point to the cydia server though...not sure if it was necessary?

If Apple is still signing 4.0.1, then it wasn't necessary. But they won't sign it forever and it will be necessary then.

Total Noob here. What does "signing" mean? I'm awaiting delivery of my IP4, and worried that it might have 4.0.2 pre-installed on it. I downloaded the 4.0.1 ipsw file and saved it on my PC. If Apples stops "signing" 4.0.1, will I still be able to shift-click restore 4.0.1 from the downloaded file on my PC?

    Thx!

Basicly "signing" means iTunes requests confirmation from apple to see if it's ok to install the firmware you are trying to load. If apple says yes the install proceeds, if no then it stops.
    Have a read here:
    http://modmyi.com/forums/3g-s-downgr...an-saurik.html

If apple does stop signing 4.0.1 then the ability to simply shift+click restore to that will be gone.

Am I being really thick here!! I've just had to install 4.02 on my 3GS in order to put my details on a new handset. You say 'use the huge download button in the toolbar' to download 4.01....I can't see no huge download button?? :/

I'm on my handset so I don't know if that's the difference but I've scrolled up and can't see any download button at all in the grey toolbar. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm colour blind or just blind

The downloads only shows up when your on the site on a computer, which you need to be using to download the fw anyway.

No matter what you need to be using a computer to download the firmware. It can't be downloaded directly to your device.
