if it's an ipod and 3g, then you need you shsh's. if it's a iphone 3g, then restore it to the firmware you want by holding option (or shift in windows) and clicking restore. then browse to the firmware you downloaded. also get tinyumbrella to kick it out of restore mode after the restore.

I am doing this at the moment too (downgrade a 3G from 4.1 to 3.1.3)but, after:

-downloading 3.1.3 from iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
-renaming the zipped file to iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw
-Setting the phone to DFU mode
    -clicking shift+restore

iTunes won't show the downloaded file. Any clues what I'm doing wrong?
    More info:
    iTunes 10
    Windows 7

    Thanks a ton.

I am having a similar problem. I restored my firmware from 4.1 to 3.1.3 at a cellphone shope to have cydia but when i connected to my itunes to get my contacts back on, it's telling me i can't "restore from backup" b/c the iphone version i have is too old.

I tried editing the host, put my phone in dfu recovery mode, held down SHIFT and selected the 4.0 firmware, but it says "The iphone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible."

Is there a way to fix this? I want to be able to sync all my stuff from itunes back on the iphone without losing cydia.

I don't think you can sync a 4.1 backup even to 4.0. You can use a tool like juicephone to extract your 4.1 backup then you can manually put your games saves and settings back on your iphone.
