The answer is Yes, but have to restore to 4.0.1 ipsw first and in order to do that you will need 4.0.1 shsh blogs to restore. If you are able to restore to a 4.0.1, jailbreakme.com from Safari on your iphone and it will be untethered jailbreak.

Sure, I will now show you one method of restoring.
Upgrade your Itunes to atleast 9.2
Let say you want to restore to 4.0.
First download the 3GS 4.0 ipsw onto your Desktop.
Edit your hosts file with Notepad and you need admin permission to edit:
    Cwindows\system32\Drivers\etc\hosts
you need to select all files *.* to see.
Add this line to the bottom
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
the rest make sure is commented out by #
save it and reboots your pc
Now do the Shift + Restore to 4.0 ipsw
Hopefully it works like a charm

If successful, then do the "Slide to Jailbreak", from the jailbreakme.com on Safari of your Iphone.

Download the latest version 4.1.4 Tiny Umbrella and see if you can grab any shsh blogs from Cydia. You can play around with Tiny Umbrella to get familiarize with it. There is this Advanced option, Display shsh and kick out of recovery loop feature. Without shsh blogs for the OS , you cannot restore to it.

You should be using a stock 4.0/4.0.1 firmware, not a custom one.

You can find one here: iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download

You could also use spirit to jailbreak untethered where you are.

Uninstall blackrain first if you do that.

You can't simply uninstall blackra1n. You can remove the app, yes, but you can not undo the jailbreak. A restore is needed.

I know, but as you click the uninstaller, you see a message that says: Uninstalling will not remove the jailbreak. It will remove this installation app.
