My friend has a old bootroom 3gs jailbroke on 4.0.1 with jailbreakme. He only has shsh for 4.0.1. Can he create a cfw for 3.1.3 using snowbreeze and downgrade to it?

    Thanks

Nope, that is not the way to go. To be able to use custom firmware, do this.
From Cydia , installl Jbme2pwn and reboots your iphone.
Now you can restore to custom firmware directly.

I have not done this personally but if anything bad happens, you still have 4.0.1 shsh to restore back, so you are good to go.

Sorry, so he can go to 3.1.3 then?

Don't want to get the blame if it messes up

Yes, you can, once you have made it compatible to use CFW. If you want to go to 3.1.3, create a custom fimware of 3.1.3 from Snowbreeze 1.5.2, I think the new snowbreeze can do that too, just restore to it.

If you want to try it , I can guide you.

Would appreciate that. I have downloaded the latest snowbreeze and the original firmware and have synced his phone with iTunes to backup his contacts. Help gratefully accepted

Once you have made it compatible, before you restore to custom firmware, put your iphone into recovery mode first.
    You are welcome.

It worked. My mates phone is now running cfw 3.1.3 3gs without shsh for that firmware

Kept getting 1600 error in iTunes when phone was in dfu mode. I restored with phone in normal mode & it breezed through. All thanks to yeow for his expert advise

Now that this iphone can accept custom firmware, it can always restore to custom firmware as long as you don't restore to stock firmware, if you do you have to start all over again.
You can even go to jailbroken 4.1 if you like.

Benefits of custom firmware : No shsh is needed, bypasses all verification.
