No one is going to steal anything from them by running their app on a jailbroken iPad are they?
Jailbroken devices are, by definition, not secure. This means that theoretically, if I so inclined to, I could crack their DRM schema and capture/redistribute content to non-DTV subscribers. Of course, I have no reason do to this, as I consider myself a whitehat hacker, but they don't like the risk.

Xcode gives app developers that much control to break out into low level assembly? Apple actually allows that? I thought everything was sort of "sandboxed" from parts of the system. Otherwise there'd be way more exploits written to undermine the root system.
The sandbox only does a few things. First, it prevents interacting with other applications beyond the specific ways apple allows ("Open In..."). It also blocks process forking and writing to any other directories other than its internal Documents, Caches, and Preferences directories. The sandbox does NOT prevent reading files from the system. They have full access to check if things like /Applications/Cydia.app exists. Of course, all of those kinds of checks have been nicely patched up in xCon. DirecTV checks for jailbreak by building a string "/Library/MobileSubstrate", loading its address into a register, then simply does this:
    Code:
    __asm__(
    "mov R12, #0xBC\n\t"
    "svc #0x80"
    );
0xBC is the syscall number for "stat", a syscall that returns info about a given filepath, and SVC is a software interrupt that calls it. Unlike every other app I've patched, this is not hookable. I can hook ObjC methods and C functions. I can't hook a ******* ARM assembly instruction. That leaves us with 3 choices:
    1. Damage the string they are checking by hooking something else (how xCon 36 works)
    2. Reimplementing the entire method without the jailbreak check (a pain, but worth it)
    3. NOPing the SVC instruction (how future xCon revisions will possibly work)

Does it work if you disable xCon?

UPDATE: I just installed it myself and it works fine.

Wow, Directv is being really sneaky with their detection method. Really good work for finding out what they are doing. App is working here because of your hard work.

It makes me wonder if this cat and mouse game will ever end. Also what other apps will come out with jailbreak detection. I also wonder if Apple themselves would implement more measures like this into some of their built-in apps in future iOS versions...

There was a rumor that some of these app devs were going to ban users by UUID... Ie) once jailbroken, always jailbroken. Thankfully I see Apple is getting away from allowing app developers from accessing the UUID.

It's finals week for me right now. I don't have time to work on xCon until I get out of school. I took a quick look at the update though and they have really stepped up their game. just downgrade for now

Thanks for your reply, I'm unable to downgrade as the downgraded version is only available to Barclay's customers - the newer version is open to everyone

could you please provide the status of MobileIron? If it is going to be implemented or when? Or what you require in order to support it?
