British Airways recently saw quick customer adoption of the Apple Watch for boarding passes which pushed the airliner to integrate new wrist-friendly ticket scanners at Londonís Heathrow Airport starting this month. Those of you who used an Apple Watch to display a board pass in the past may have realized that some ticket scanners canít work with wrist-worn displays. More specifically, scanners donít offer the necessary clearance to fit a userís wrist underneath, instead being designed for paper tickets or thin smartphones.

In this particular case, British Airways has seen the use of its Apple Watch app increase 386% in just four months between June and October. After seeing the demand among its customers, British Airways recently announced that it will use new wrist-friendly scanners to make its Apple Watch app easier and faster to use. A total of 136 new ďScan and GoĒ devices will be able to accommodate a passengerís wrist at Heathrowís Terminal 3 and 5. The scanners will be active as of December 15th.

The airline claims that the apple Watch already accounts for more than 5% of its mobile app usage. For those of you who didnít know, the official British Airways app gives customers information beyond their boarding pass including real-time flight status, gate information, a countdown to departure time and the weather at their destination. British Airwaysí Head of ba.com and Mobile, Kevin McQuillan, had the following to say regarding the matter:

We are always striving to make our customers' journeys easier through use of technology. When we saw the dramatic rise in the number of people using the app on their Apple watches we knew we needed to create new features in the terminal which would make the experience even better for them.
Generally speaking, British Airways has been quick to adopt new mobile technology and this was no exception. The company has had an Apple Watch app available at the deviceís launch in April.

Have any of you had a chance to use the British Airways Apple Watch app? If so, share your thoughts below!

For checking in at Heathrow terminal 5 the phone is still currently easier, but once airside the watch comes into its own, no more pulling the phone out or looking for the flight information boards and works fine at the gate in business class. You can't use it to gain access to the BA lounge unfortunately. Hope BA role this out to to other UK airports quickly so my phone can stay in my pocket rather then being handed over to check in staff
