Technically the best mac would be a Mac Pro with a huge cinema display, but that is definitely not the best for everyone. What do you need more in a computer? Power, Speed, Portability? What is your budget like? Apple has multiple lines, and one of them will be the best for you.

A good family computer would be an iMac. An ultraportble laptop would be the macbook air. A powerful but still portable computer would be a Macbook pro. for me, price was the biggest issue so I've got a regular macbook.

I would recommend going to your local apple store (or best buy! now they carry apple computers, yay!) and look at all the options and your budget. Also remember that student discounts save a lot of money (if you have any students in your family), and don't rule out buying a used mac. I bought my macbook used. Good luck!

A third choice of "both" or "all" should have been included. I have XP, Vista, and Leopard 10.5.2 on my PC.

There is nothing wrong with Vista if you have 2Gb RAM.

I have no experience of Apple OS (except going way back to the first personal PCs).

My impression is that you can't fanny about as much with them but they are very pretty (both externally and the look of the OS).

However, using a PC I can (and do) triple boot to XP, Vista or Linux. I get the impression that there is much more a user can do in configuring the non Apple machines. That may be a good or a bad thing depending on how much of a nerd you are.

I have had a lot of fun building my own PCs over the years. You can't do that with an Apple machine (or can you?) Anyway, PCs are cheaper to build and buy than Macs of an equivalent processing power.

Have I just classified myself as a nerd?

One of the things I like about my iphone is that the hacking community has opened it up for fiddling with. And it seems to run on some flavour of Linux. A basic out of the box iPhone would never have tempted me away from a Pocket PC.
