    That answers that, huh?

Had fun at the Apple Store today. Didn't buy anything, but got a LOT of insight into Apple's mid-level workings. Nice managers (who know you) FTW. All anecdotal stuff coming up, but I think it's valid (or at least close).

One: No carrier anywhere on the earth has direct access to the "IMEI whitelist." They can ask Apple to add a particular iPhone to the whitelist, which someone at Apple corporate manually "approves" and places on the list. Not even the "factory unlocked" phones are automatically enrolled on the whitelist with their first activation--they still need approval supposedly. Admittedly, though, it gets done fairly quickly (I would guess the "factory unlocked" IMEIs get pre-approved or something).

Two: There is no difference between any model of iPhone sold in the US aside from its SKU and model number (for GSM). Meaning any phone can be locked or unlocked at Apple's will. All GSM phones sold in the US are still initially locked to AT&T--any customer trying to buy an unlocked phone masquerading as a locked one will find themselves unpleasantly surprised.

Three: Apple's backend in the USA will in fact allow a sales rep to manually flag a purchase as "device-only purchase" meaning that Apple can remotely unlock it after the sale (after "approval").

Four: A certain manager at the Aspen Grove Apple Store is a L.S.O.S.

    That is all.

Orby didn't think one of his buddies worked at this Apple Store. He does.

We'll see. I also sent an e-mail to the infamous "sjobs at apple" address.

If you can get the sites search button to actually pull up the couple posts I made about unlocked iPhones you will see that I posted this at the start of the year as well without any special insight. It doesn't mean anything, I'm just saying I posted the same info at the start of the year - go me. I had bought a factory unlocked iPhone and somehow found out the imei was on a whitelist and it was otherwise 100% just plain Jane iPhone.
