I'm from Puerto Rico and lived through both Hugo and I think Andrew (around '96).

Hugo especially was terrifying as I lived in the mountains and our house was made of wood. Nothing like being 6 years old and having to run with your family to the neighbors in the middle of category 3 winds because we had assumed (incorrectly) that since it had weakened (only cat 3 when it hit PR) we could have ridden it out and suddenly it feels like the house is being held by a string and is about to give.

Watching your house from afar for hours just praying it doesn't fall/get torn by the winds were the most miserable hours of my early life. I was young but I was very aware of what was happening.

That said, being able to go outside while the "eye" is right above you has a certain beauty to it. Then it all goes to hell again shortly after.

The house survived Hugo but living in the mountains meant that all the downed trees made it impossible for us to leave the area or rescue services to come to us. Thankfully we had stocked up on food as we were without any form of communication for almost 2 weeks.

I'm a helpful jerk, fear me.

Wow, never had an experience like that before. Our houses are all made of stone so we ride out hurricanes pretty safely, can't imagine what it would be like in a wooden house. Been through one eye of the storm in the 80's, that was pretty cool seeing everything go dead silent like nothing was happening. Came out pretty good with this one, went down to a cat 1 just before it hit us so we were pretty lucky.
