Disney and Apple have been long time partners in the media with Steve Jobs being the largest shareholder through animation studio Pixar and Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, currently also serving on Apple’s Board of Directors. As of right now, Walt Disney Co. is supposedly working on a new app for ABC that will have live streaming television, making its content available to cable and satellite subscribers.
According to The New York Times, people who have Internet service will be able to view live programming on this new app. Although ABC is a free public network, the streaming app will only be made available to subscribers of cable and satellite. Brian Stelter states, "with the app, ABC, a subsidiary of Disney, will become the first of the American broadcasters to provide a live Internet stream of national and local programming to people who pay for cable or satellite." ABC already has a universal app called ABC Player for the iPhone and iPad, which streams episodes of shows previously shown. Back in 2010, they also developed a launch day app for the original iPad.
Disney has a similar app, Watch ESPN, for Apple’s iOS that already streams sports events for users that meet the requirements with their cable operator. According to sources, the new ABC app could be released as early as this year. Disney is definitely a fan of Apple as they use products like the iPod Touch and iPad at some of its theme parks to better serve visitors.
