The founder of Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth, recently crossed off one of the biggest goals of his operating system’s development: removing Microsoft’s dominance in the PC market. Although it wasn’t Ubuntu that made the difference, Shuttleworth doesn’t seem to care which operating system ended up changing the market. According to him it was actually Android and iOS that solved the problem which he previously listed as “Bug #1” in Ubuntu’s development logs back in 2004.
Shuttleworth’s bug report was finally marked complete as of this past week with a note saying the following:
I think it's important for us to recognize that the shift has taken place. So from Ubuntu's perspective, this bug is now closed.
Despite that, Shuttleworth notes that companies such as Microsoft have also become more accepting of other developers’ software. He wrote that Microsoft Azure in particular is a “pleasure to work with” on Linux and that today “circumstances have changed markedly from how they were in 2004.
It’s pretty interesting and probably quite surprising that Microsoft’s dominance is being shifted partially because of Apple’s iOS platform.
