• The Future of the Jailbroken iOS App: iFile

Many of you who have jailbroken devices are probably quite familiar with iFile and those of you who aren’t should have several reasons to go check it out. The description in Cydia says the following regarding the jailbroken app:

iFile is a complete file manager and viewer running under user root. iFile gives you full access to your jailbroken device’s files, like Finder does on your desktop Mac. iFile is your tool for advanced management and customization of files on your device.

iFile allows fast navigation through the iPhone file system in multiple tabs. You can directly view files of many types, including images, movies, sound, text, HTML, web archives, Microsoft and Apple iWork files, PDFs, and compressed formats.

iFile lets you handle software files and multimedia in flexible ways, including:

    • Copy, paste rename and move files
    • Edit text files and property lists, such as configuration files.
    • Install .deb software packages.
    • Pack and unpack ZIPs and other compressed files.
    • Import mp3s and other files into your iPod library

iFile also provides easy ways to get files in and out of your device:

    • Upload and download files from iFile’s built-in web server via a web browser or connecting to it as a network drive (WebDAV).
    • Manage, copy, and move files in your Dropbox, Box or FTP account.
    • Show and download files from a Toshiba FlashAir card.
    • Send files as email attachments.
    • Mount Apple disk image (DMG ) files.
    • Send files to iFile on other iDevices via Bluetooth.
    • Integrates with AttachmentSaver, Safari Download Manager, and Celeste Bluetooth File Sharing.
One of the many questions people ask regarding iFile is: Why doesn’t Apple approve iFile?

The developer Casten Heinelt (@iFile4iPhone) clarified the answer in his talk at Worldwide Jailbreak Con 2013. He stated that there are several reasons why they don’t, including the fact that iFile runs a user root and that it uses private APIs.

Considering the app has so many uses, aside from performance improvements, what else does iFile have in store for its future? Apparently quite a few things according to Carsten.

The developer mentioned that he will be working on an iOS 7 update which will include a graphical user interface update and icons. He also mentioned support for additional cloud drives such as Google Drive and Sky Drive. Last but not least, he mentioned that he will be releasing an iteration of iFile in the App Store, although this version will be limited as it won’t have root access, will not use private APIs and won’t allow for calling of external executables.

It's gonna blow on the App Store. It's going to be so limited. But it's a step in the right direction.

all the excitement and adventure that's already available on other platforms--without any hacks or limitations.
just think, in a few years you'll be able to send emails with attachments.

Just think, a few years ago (before the iPhone came out) you were using feature phones and the killer smartphone was the ever so reliable blackberry.

      AND…

Just think, android has almost a 1-1 ratio of apps to malware. Love that open source…

My guess is not much. It will mostly be on par with numerous File Managers on Appstore. May be it will be more efficient than them but functionality wise, definitely not even close to what it is on Jailbroken Devices.

I wish the Dev would address the UIButtonBarOpaque file issue. He said he had no idea. It resizes that file when u select a file. But is black by default so u dont normally see it, if u theme it via compiling your own [email protected]k file then it looks whack except when black.

It would have been good if he had used

      [email protected]

      Or

      [email protected]

like Apple do. My only gripe otherwise it's a fantastic Tweak (most used)

it's a WONDERFUL App defiantly worth the price. I don't see this EVER going to The App store , BUT...i see it getting BETTER with the implementation of iOS7.

Can't see apple ever letting it do what it does so well with a jailbroken phone

where are you getting these statistics for how much malware there is on android.
im certain it isn't that high, classic apple fan blowing things out of proportion...

For the love of god stop posting.

iFile is what saves me from buying a PC.

My thanks to the dev and jailbreak devs for that.

      Mobility rules !

Regarding these news, the iFile in AppStore certainly will be some file viewer with nice cloud support but so limited in comparison with what it brings is with on jailbreak'd devices.

I look forward to the new design of the Cydia version though. It'll be the first thing I'll install on jailbreak'd iOS 7, and the truth is it'll be one of the few things I think I'll need for the next firmware : to customise its look. Cause control center, the new multitasking interface and the UI look like they'll make many of my tweaks useless (NCSettings, Bulletin, Multifl0w...).

Let's hope we get a means to theme iOS 7. I'm sure we will. It just may not be WinterBoard or anything as popular.

Future will tell, hey Jato_BZ ?
