Verizon on Thursday reported strong iPhone sales last quarter.
The nation's largest carrier activated approximately 3.9 million iPhones in its third fiscal quarter of 2013.
Overall, iPhone activations accounted for more than half of all smartphone activations for the carrier during the three-month period covered in the new report. Year-over-year for Q3, iPhone sales were up 26% through Verizon.
According to Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo, Apple failed to provide Verizon with enough iPhone 5S units in the first weeks following its release, "resulting in a backlog of orders."
Whatever new iPhones Verizon customers couldn't buy in September simply got pushed over to the current quarter, Shammo said.
