• Pebble Announces Impending Launch of Pebble "Appstore" and Second-Gen SDK

Pebble, the smart watch maker, recently announced that developers will soon be able to list their applications in a first-party app store that will live inside the companion smartphone app. The “Pebble appstore” will include six categories at launch including the following: Daily, Remotes, Sports & Fitness, Notifications, Tools & Utilities and Games. These categories will be accompanied by a dedicated area for watch faces. Furthermore, the Pebble appstore will also allow cross-linking to the iOS App Store and Android’s Google Play store for developers whose Pebble applications have other, separate mobile companion apps.

The company announced that only free application will be supported initially and Pebble won’t curate the store, similar to the Google Play Store, meaning any app can be listed. The problematic apps will be dealt with retroactively according to the company.

The applications submitted to Pebble’s appstore must be written with the watch’s second-gen software development kit, which the company unveiled last month. Pebble SDK 2.0 gives developers access to four new APIs which include: JavaScript, Accelerometer, Data Logging and Persistent Storage.

To circumvent Apple’s App Store terms of service which prevents iOS applications from executing code downloaded from the internet, Pebble says they will package the JavaScript code from the Pebble appstore applications inside the official iOS app. This appears to mean that the company would need to push an update to their official iOS app any time a change is made to a JavaScript-based Pebble application., which could potentially be tedious for them an inconvenient from a consumer-standpoint.

It should also be noted that third-party app stores such as MyPebbleFaces.com, won’t be locked out as a result of the Pebble appstore’s launch. The company states that current methods of sideloading applications will continue to function the same way.

The Pebble appstore and Pebble SDK 2.0 are said to launch “early next year.” Are any of you Pebble smart watch owners excited for what’s to come?

This makes me want to get a Pebble even more. I hope this works out decently well on apple platforms.
