• The App Store's Top 10 Grossing Apps in 2013

One of Apple’s taglines for its App Store has always been “there’s an app for that,” a saying which emphasizes the wide array of app categories available. When it comes to spending money on the iPhone or iPad, Distimo’s 2013 Year in Review report showcases that games are continuing their App Store dominance. When looking at the list of the top 10 grossing apps in the marketplace for the year of 2013, all 10 of them happen to be games, which isn’t surprising.

If you have spent time in the App Store over the past year, you’ll likely spot some familiar names on the list:

    1. Clash of Clans
    2. Candy Crush Saga
    3. Hay Day
    4. Puzzles & Dragons
    5. The Hobbit: Kingdom of Middle-Earth
    6. Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North
    7. Minecraft – Pocket Edition
    8. Modern War
    9. The Simpsons: Tapped Out
    10. Big Fish Casino

For those of you who were able to identify the games on the list, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see that nine of the top ten grossing apps follow a free-to-play model, with Minecraft being the only exception. This isn’t particularly surprising, considering that the vast majority of the new games on the App Store are taking advantage of the in-app purchase model, since it appears to be quite successful.

Which of the games have you tried?
