Starting next week, Starbucks customers who pay with their iPhones will not only be able to buy Caramel Macchiatos using their phones, but they will also be able to tip their baristas with their iPhones as well. An update to the app will take place on March 19th and for the first time, a digital tipping option will be added. Users will be able to add a tip of $.50 up to $2 to the baristas.
The new update will make the app easier to navigate and will have a new ‘Shake to Pay’ feature that will instantly load your card up from anywhere within the app. So if you are at the front of the line and have no money left on the card, this feature will save you from holding up the rest of the line to reload your card. After you scan your phone and make a payment, a push notification will be sent asking for you to leave a tip for the virtual tip jar. Tips could also be adjusted or changed for up to 2 hours after you leave the shop and in the form of a digital receipt, you will be able to access all purchases.
According to Cliff Burrows, Starbucks’ group president for the U.S. and Americas,
As more and more customers are using their phone to pay, they have also asked for a convenient and meaningful way to show their appreciation to store partners.
