• Amazon to Launch Apple TV Competitor Any Time Now

As MMi first reported in late February, Amazon is on the verge of launching a competitor to the Apple TV, delivering its first set-top box product to consumers who may appreciate the opportunity to stream to their televisions a wide array of multimedia content procured through Amazon and a host of other leading content providers.

Sources in the know tell The Wall Street Journal today that Amazon will begin shipping its video-streaming device in early April. The device in question will not only be available through Amazon's website, but also through its retail partners, including Best Buy and Staples.

"The Amazon device will carry a variety of apps available on Roku Inc. and Apple Inc. set-top boxes and run on a version of Google Inc.'s Android software, like Amazon's tablet computers," sources confess. "Roku's most popular apps include video services Netflix and Hulu Plus and music service Pandora, as well as Amazon's own video-streaming service."

For now, no details regarding the device's price have been made available. But with Amazon having just upped the price of its Prime membership from $79 to $99 annually, it's clear that we will soon know more about the set-top product as the launch is said to be "imminent."
