• Report Claims Apple is Number 2 Online Retailer Behind Amazon

Amazon is the world’s largest online sales entity, however, Apple has been growing in the last three years and is now in second place, surpassing office supply company Staples. The Wall Street Journal has reported that e-commerce research firm Internet Retailer shows that Apple quickly gained ground on competitors in 2013 and took second place with $18.3 billion online sales. Apple notched a 24% increase in online sales to $18.3 billion last year. Amazon however, sold $67.8 billion in media, electronics, and other products- which is more than ten of its closest competitors combined.

Part of Apple’s spike in sales is due to the Internet Retailer’s inclusion of hardware sales data for the first time in its report. Other retailers also performed well in 2013, keeping up with a general upward trend in online sales in the last few years. Retail chain Wal-Mart, known for its brick-and-motor stores, had the strongest gains in 2013 increasing by 30% from last year and picking up over $10 billion in sales.

Previous no. 2 competitor Staples, was surpassed by Apple and fell to no. 3 and brought in $10.4 billion, which was only a 1% increase year-over-year. Sears came in no. 5 and brought in $4.9 billion ins 2013.
