• The Creator of Apple's Core Animation to Reportedly Leave for Work at Facebook

The creator of Apple’s Core Animation tool for developers, John Harper, has reportedly taken a new position at social networking company Facebook. The announcement was highlighted on Daring Fireball and the departure was recently released on Twitter. The “Core Animation” compositing and animation framework that was featured on the 2007 iPhone OS and then OS X 10.5 Leopard, was designed by Harper. His name appears as the inventor on many Apple key software patents, related to iOS and OS X. The implementation of the “CoreImage” real-time image-processing engine was also co-designed by Harper, which was later released in OS X 10.4 Tiger in 2005. According to this LinkedIn profile, he has been with Apple for over 12 years.

Harper’s new position will reunite him with previous engineer and designer from Apple, Kimon Tsinteris, who now works on Facebook for iOS. Tsinteris announced on Twitter recently that he was excited to be working with Harper again and Harper thanked him on Twitter and revealed that he would be officially starting next week. Neither mentioned Facebook in their messages, but Harper’s profile already states that he formerly had a position at Apple in the past tense.

Core Animation is found in both Apple’s iOS mobile platform for the iPad and iPhone as well as the Mac OS X operating system. It is used by developers to animate the views and visual elements of third-party apps and it makes creating the right look and feel to their applications simpler.
