Is Samsung trailing Apple into the realm of sapphire? It sure looks like it, according to the latest buzz surrounding the South Korean tech giant and maker of the world's most pervasive handsets.
With Apple’s Mesa, Arizona sapphire plant, built in partnership with GT Advanced Technologies, making strides at a hurried pace, leading competitors in mobile - like Samsung, LG, and others - are purportedly eager to ensure that they're not left behind in the sapphire surge unfolding in mobile tech today.
"According to industry insiders cited by the Korean media earlier today, both Samsung and LG have recently got in touch with sapphire glass manufacturers / suppliers in order to receive a few samples of their work," GforGames reports. "Allegedly, both companies have reviewed the material last year as well, but due to the fact that sapphire glass is a rather expensive material, neither Samsung nor LG have been willing to adopt it."
In recent years, sapphire has been used for the creation of smartphones, but the material has largely been limited to "exclusive" or high-end devices. Despite playing a small role in sensitive component parts for more mainstream devices - like the fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 5s - it's clear that the potential of sapphire remains vastly underutilized across the hardware industry.
And Apple and Samsung are apparently eager to change that reality.
