• Apple Grants Third-Party App Devs Access to Touch ID

Despite only a brief acknowledgement on stage today during WWDC 2014, the news was big, indeed.

Apple today confirmed that it is opening up Touch ID to third party app developers. This change of business as usual is new to iOS 8.

Until now, the often-lauded fingerprint security hardware and software solution from Apple has been strictly limited to first-party apps. Since the launch of TouchID, countless developers have expressed frustration with being shut out. But now, that frustration is coming to an end.

Apple, however, maintains that Touch ID never makes fingerprint data available to third parties, thereby ensuing extreme security and privacy despite the new opportunity extended to developers.

iOS 8 will be available for developers as a developer preview later today before its public - and free - release this fall, likely in conjunction with the launch of iPhone 6.
