• Tim Cook Directly Involved in Search for New PR Boss

On May 7th, MMi reported that Katie Cotton, who has been with Apple for close to two decades, decided to retire from her position as VP of worldwide corporate communications.

Following 18 years of exemplary service, Cotton is proving difficult to replace. Consequently, we're told that Apple CEO Tim Cook has a vested interested in the search for Cotton's permanent replacement.

John Paczkowski of Re/Code said Monday that Cook is personally overseeing the search and is looking for high-quality external candidates. In other words, Apple may not promote from within to fill the critical role voided by Cotton.

"He’s paying particular attention to those he believes could put a friendlier, more approachable face on Apple’s public relations efforts," Paczkowski says. "Hardly surprising, as VP of comms is a position that reports directly to Cook, and he obviously wants to put the best person he possibly can into it."

Although it doesn't appear that either Apple veterans Steve Dowling and Nat Kerris - both of whom were "groomed" for their respective communications roles by Steve Jobs - will get a promotion to Cotton's seat, it isn't know why. And that has some folks scratching their heads, including Paczkowski. "Would Dowling and Kerris stick around if one or both didn’t get the job?" he asks. For now, nobody seems to know.
