• Code in iOS 8 Reveals Ability to Use Split-screen Multitasking Coming Soon

We reported in the middle of May that iOS 8 would bring with it a split-screen multitasking feature for the iPad, but it was still in its early stages and wasn't ready to be demoed at WWDC 2014 (and it was not).

While we haven't yet seen any actual proof that this feature would be coming, that all changed on Monday. iOS developer Steven Troughton-Smith Tweeted a Tweet confirming that iOS 8 indeed includes code relating to the feature, and suggests that the feature will be coming in a future release of iOS 8, whether it will come in a beta, or come in a later public release is still unknown:

The developer notes that applications will be able to run side-by-side either in 1/4 mode, 1/2 mode, or 3/4 mode, depending on the user's personal taste. He also notes that when opening the App Switcher, if you're running two applications at once on the same display, those two applications will appear under the same application preview card in the App Switcher.

Reports are suggesting that the feature may be limited to the iPad Air, and may come to other devices in the future. Side-by-side application multitasking is just what iOS tablets need to compete with existing tablets in the market. Windows 8 tablets, for example, can already do this.

If you have a jailbroken iOS 7 or iOS 6 device, you can already run applications side-by-side with a new jailbreak tweak called OS Experience by iOS developer Evan Swick. Swick recently released an iOS 6 version of the tweak.

Are you excited to hear about this feature coming to iOS in the future?
