• ABI Says Android Poised to Topple iOS Tablets

The end of an era is upon us. Soon, according to new projections from ABI Research, Android tablets will topple the global dominance of iOS tablets.

Although Apple's iPad is expected to remain the leading OEM brand in 2014, this year should also be a watershed for the tablet installed base, with active Android devices surpassing iOS for the first time.

"The first quarter of 2014 was nothing to brag about for most tablet vendors, experiencing a 30% unit decline, though [ABI Research] expects growth to resume over the balance of the year, as branded OEM shipments will exceed 200 million in 2014," reads the ABI report summary, citing the firm's latest market forecasts.

If, on the other hand, Apple's next-generation iPads (including iPad mini 3) prove to be hotter commodities than anticipated, Apple may recapture some of its lost tablet market share, especially if older generation iPads (iPad Air and iPad mini 2) are significantly discounted and prove more affordable in emerging markets.
