• South Korea Compels Apple to Revamp App Store Refund Policies

    Apple and Google are being compelled to revise their respective app store refund policies in South Korea. And if these tech giants want to continue growing their mobile app businesses in this particular market, they're going to have to comply with the ruling.

    The Korea Fair Trade Commission, in an effort to protect consumers, wants to make it less arduous for consumers to secure refunds for poorly made apps that don't deliver as expected or advertised. The nation's anti-trust authority began investigating app store policies following the loud outcries to do so by the Citizen’s Coalition for Economic Justice.

    Four months ago, the commission determined that KT, SK Planet, LG Electronics and LG Uplus would need to revise their webstore policies. Since then, the momentum for change hasn't subsided. And South Korean regulators hope that the policy revisions will inspire similar changes around the world.

    “The FTC’s corrective orders will become benchmark cases for other countries, which face growing customer complaints over unfair provisions in contracts of mobile webstore operators,” says Hwang Won-chul, who is in charge of the KFTC’s Adhesion Contract Division.
