• 4th Gen iPod With 5MP Camera, FaceTime in Sept?

Rumors about the next iOS device refresh have begun in earnest, with a UK retailer speculating on a 4th generation iPod touch in September. The website Unbeatable.co.uk reports that at its "Xmas in July" event, John Lewis made a presentation that referenced reports from the supply chain about an iPod refresh that would add many iPhone 4 features, such as a gyroscope as well as a 5-megapixel camera. Reportedly, the new device would also have a front-facing camera and support FaceTime calling over WiFi.

John Lewis is an upscale department store chain with 26 locations in England, Scotland and Wales. As "Britain's Favourite Department Store" according to a 2009 survey, and with a Royal Warrant to provide household goods to the Queen, the retailer carries a lot of market clout. Its sources may well be pretty good, but the prediction is also almost certainly informed by a lot of speculation. The fourth-generation iPod touch John Lewis said, will be aimed squarely at "youth/kids," with gaming and multimedia features. According to Unbeatable's report on the John Lewis presentation, the new iPod touch will get "motion sensors" for gaming, The article wasn't specific about what those are supposed to be, but was clear that that they would be something different than the gyroscope and accelerometer. The new device is also said to be able to take HD video with the back-facing camera, and allow FaceTime calling over WiFi with the front-facing camera.

September is becoming the traditional release date for new iPod models, with refreshes of either the iPod nano or touch (or both) coming every year since 2005. So a refresh of the line is pretty well guaranteed this year, the only question is what features we'll see.
