• Controversy Curtails iPad Deal with LA Unified School District

Last year, the academic world largely lavished praise -- at least at first -- upon the LA Unified School District when it struck a groundbreaking deal with Apple to supply a large number of students in the Los Angeles community with iPads for their academic work.

But the program itself has been mired in controversy since its inception, culminating in a suspension of the program this week. On Monday, L.A. schools Supt. John Deasy made the call to curtail the $1 billion-plus deal.

The suspension comes days after disclosures that the superintendent and his top deputy had especially close ties to executives of Apple, maker of the iPad, and Pearson, the company that is providing the curriculum on the devices. And an internal report that examined the technology effort showed major problems with the process and the implementation.
"Moving forward, we will no longer utilize our current contract with Apple Inc.," Deasy penned in a note to the Board of Education on Monday. "Not only will this decision enable us to take advantage of an ever-changing marketplace and technology advances, it will also give us time to take into account concerns raised surrounding the [project]."

The LA Unified School District is the country's second-largest school system.

      Union/ government corruption is good?

When you're dealing with taxpayer money, maybe it isn't the best idea to use that money to purchase a high-end luxury computer (sans keyboard, mind) without considering alternatives.
