Is Apple planning to shut down Beats steaming music service? Following the Mac-maker's $3 billion acquisition of the Dr. Dre-backed business, it appears Apple is taking Beats in a different direction.
First reported by TechCrunch, multiple sources close to Apple attest to suggestions that Apple will soon close the service. This news, of course, only adds to the speculation about Apple's plans, specifically since the company did not bring a pre-installed Beats app or related service to iOS 8.
"Shutting down Beats Music also meshes with reports that the Beats acquisition was mostly about getting Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre’s talent on board," the report reads, "and picking up the headphone business, not about streaming music."
More than likely, the report proposes, Apple simply wants to operate at all times under one brand image. Scaling back on the Beats brand to better absorb it into Apple's may be the bigger play here.
