• Preorders Commence for iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3

As promised Thursday, preorders have commenced for Apple's freshly unveiled iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.

After a protracted period of downtime early Friday morning, the online Apple Store has been running smoothly with no serious -- or even minor -- glitches to speak of (for the time being).

Although no one expected the type of crushing demand for these new iPads that we saw last month with the iPhone 6 launch, it seems preorders are rolling along at a steady pace based on the flurry of social media chatter today among iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 buyers.

New orders placed for iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 show that they will ship in two to four business days.

The iPad Air 2 starts at $499 (Wi-Fi 16GB). The 64GB model goes for $599 and the high-end 128GB model is priced at $699. Among the Wi-Fi + Cellular models, the 16GB model starts at $629. The 64GB version is $729, and the 128GB monster Wi-Fi +Cellular iPad Air 2 is going for $829.

iPad mini 3 (16 GB) starts at $399. It's $499 for 64 gigs, and the 128GB model runs $599. The LTE-ready models tack on a $130 bump up in price
