• Adobe Releases Import Plugin for Lightroom to Help Users Transition from Aperture

This past week, Adobe announced the availability of a Lightroom plug-in that streamlines the process of importing Aperture photo libraries. The plug-in seems to be timed to coincide with the launch of OS X Yosemite. The move comes in light of Apple’s previous announcement where they stated that they would drop support for Aperture. Adobe has taken the approach in an effort to gain market share at the expense of the image editing app’s demise.

The latest effort seems to be in the form of a plugin that helps to transition existing Aperture photo libraries into Lightroom 5.6 or later. Along with the plugin, Adobe seems to be extending a free three-month subscription to photography training program, KelbyOne. Membership to the program includes the following perks:

    • Step-by-step training series to streamline the transition from Aperture to Lightroom
    • Full access to comprehensive training videos on Lightroom and Photoshop, lighting and photography
    • 3-month digital subscription to Photoshop User; and additional bonus content

For those of you who didn’t remember, Adobe previously published a how-to guide for moving content from Apple’s Aperture to Lightroom. Adobe Lightroom is part of the company’s Creative Cloud Photography subscription plan which gives users access to the latest versions of Photoshop, Lightroom and mobile imaging apps for $9.99 per month. More recently, Adobe improved its iOS app library with major updates for its apps: Photoshop Sketch, Photoshop Mix, Lightroom, Color CC and Illustrator Line.

Apple recently issued what appears to be one of the last updates for Aperture making the software fully compatible with OS X Yosemite. The new Photos app seems to be a mix between Apple’s previous pro-level Aperture and the consumer level iPhoto which is set to be released in 2015. Many users weren’t happy with the direction Apple took regarding the matter so we’ll have to see how successful Adobe’s efforts turn out to be.
