• Everything You Need to Know About Pangu's iOS 8.0-8.1 Jailbreak

Wednesday morning, the Pangu jailbreak team released a jailbreak for the iOS 8.1 firmware. It doesn't include Cydia, so for the time being, it's an SSH-only jailbreak. It's also worth noting that the tool is only available in Chinese for Windows there is no English or Mac OS X version available yet. For what it is, this is more like a pre-release jailbreak for developers to get their hands on before the actual public jailbreak is ready for its prime time so that they can prepare their jailbreak tweaks for the public.

You may have a lot of questions about the jailbreak, such as:

    • Is it safe?
    • When will Cydia be ready?
    • Will my jailbreak tweaks work?
    • When will an English version be out?
    • When will Mac OS X be supported?
    • What devices are supported?

To answer those questions, yes, it's a safe jailbreak. At this point in time the reason that Cydia is not bundled with the Pangu jailbreak for iOS 8.1 is because Cydia is not yet ready, and neither is Cydia Substrate. They won't be a for a little while too, because Saurik is currently out of town, as Kyle Matthews noted earlier this morning while citing an official response from Saurik on Reddit.

Will your jailbreak tweaks work? Well, that's a huge question that we can't answer just yet. First of all, Cydia Substrate isn't even ready for iOS 8.1 yet, which means jailbreak tweaks won't run on iOS 8.1 properly yet. When Saurik updates Cydia Substrate, along with Cydia, then we'll have more information on that. At this point in time, you can assume that no, they're not yet compatible until at least Cydia Substrate is updated.

An English version of the Pangu jailbreak tool will hopefully be released in the next few days. The Pangu jailbreak team officially announced this on Twitter this morning:

If you're a Mac OS X user, then you may be waiting a while. The Pangu jailbreak team says that right now, there is a lot of work to do (presumably bug-fixing), which takes the front seat right now. The Pangu jailbreak team says not to expect a Mac OS X release in the very near future, although a Mac OS X version will certainly be released at some point:

As for what devices are supported... pretty much all of them that can run iOS 8.1:

    • iPod touch 5g
    • iPhone 4s
    • iPhone 5
    • iPhone 5s
    • iPhone 5c
    • iPhone 6
    • iPhone 6 Plus
    • iPad Mini with retina display
    • iPad Mini 3
    • iPad Air
    • iPad Air 2

Another important thing to note is that just after releasing the Cydia-less Pangu for iOS 8.1 Wednesday morning, the Pangu jaibreak team released an updated version of the tool (version 1.0.1) with some additional bug fixes and performance improvements, which is available to download at this link.

Oh and... for laughs... i0n1c is already complaining as a part of his ritualistic behavior with the release of any new jailbreak, as pod2g notes on Twitter:

Should you jailbreak right now? you could, but like the Pangu jailbreak team, we strongly recommend that you wait until Cydia is actually updated and bundled with the jailbreak. By then, the Pangu jailbreak should have most of its major bugs hammered out, which is good for the user base.

If you missed anything, this pretty much sums it all up. Stay tuned and we will continue to keep you updated on the progress of Pangu for iOS 8.1, the status of Cydia and Cydia Substrate, and more!
