Amazon Introduces 'Echo', a Siri-Like Virtual Assistant Speaker
Published on 2014-11-07 05:25 AM
For those of you who didn’t already know, Amazon recently unveiled a new product called Echo. It is a virtual assistant that connects via the Internet in a cylinder tube like standalone speaker. The hardware has a Siri-like voice assistant built into it and can answer tasks, perform functions requested, and extend to mobile apps. It has many similarities to Apple’s Siri, Google Now, and Microsoft’s Cortana, except for being a stationary device that is meant for consumers to use at home.
Consumers can ask questions like ‘what time is it?’ and ‘what’s the weather like’ when the word “Alexa” is said out loud. Other tasks the device can complete include playing music, updating a to-do list, setting an alarm, and more. Amazon has noted that Echo uses far-field microphone technology, in which noise cancellation and seven microphones and are used to pick up a request from across a room. On the music side, Echo is built to connect with Prime Music, iHeartRadio, Amazon Music, and TuneIn accounts, as well as Bluetooth streaming from a phone or tablet.
A release date for Echo has yet to be announced but if you are interested, you will need to request for an invitation in order to purchase the device. Amazon Prime members can then purchase Echo for $99 and for non-Prime members, it will cost you $199. Amazon’s reservation site says invitations are set to go out in the coming weeks, so if you want it for the holiday season, we’d recommend requesting for an invitation soon.
