• Facebook Messenger Mobile App Now Has 500 Million Users Per Month

Facebook, despite forcing its users to download the Facebook Messenger application to enjoy any kind of messaging functionality on their mobile devices, has achieved a new milestone of more than 500 million users of the mobile Facebook Messenger application per month.

Announced Monday on Facebook's blog, the social networking giant notes that Facebook Messenger is one of the company's first independent applications that it launched apart from the main Facebook application and that it was launched in 2011.

Messaging is an important part of how people stay connected and since Messenger launched in 2011 we’ve been passionate about giving people a faster and more expressive way to communicate.

Today more than 500 million people are using Messenger each month and we’re more committed than ever to make it the best possible messaging experience.

Messenger was the first of our standalone apps, and unlike our core Facebook apps, it focused on one use case – messaging. With Messenger, you can reach people instantly. It is just as fast as SMS but gives you the ability to express yourself in ways that SMS can’t. You can send stickers or videos, take selfies, chat with groups and make free calls. We’ve also continued to improve speed and reliability. Updates to Messenger ship every two weeks so it continues to evolve and improve.

This is an exciting milestone but with a half billion people relying on Messenger to communicate and connect, it is also a reminder that there is so much left for us to do.
While there may be more than 500 million users of the Facebook Messenger application for mobile devices, it's worth noting that the company could have even more if they could find a way to bring it back to the Facebook application. Many people are upset that they have to have another application on their Home Screen to work around the same service – Facebook.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently expressed that he feels the independent Facebook Messenger application was a necessary road to go down due to the sheer amount of Facebook Messenger users and due to all of the messages being sent on a daily basis; the CEO also believes that doing all this from the main Facebook application brings too much distraction and makes messaging harder.

Are you one of the 500 million users?
