Apple CEO Tim Cook recently sat down with civil rights activist, Rev. Jesse Jackson, to discuss a range of topics including the Cupertino California company’s initiative to create a more diversified tech industry. Specific details of the meet weren’t disclosed but both Cook and Jackson did go on the record to state that the discussion was productive. Jackson said the following about Cook regarding the matter:
I am impressed with him and the conversation. He has a real vision for Apple and he sees the value in inclusiveness.
Apple is deeply committed to diversity within our company and the advancement of human rights around the world. We had a productive meeting with Rev. Jesse Jackson and we value his input. We look forward to working with him, our employees, customers and other stakeholders as we look for ways to do more.
The topic of employee diversification and wage gaps are becoming increasingly popular in the tech industry. As part of an initiative to release diversification statistics, Apple in August issued a report that revealed most of its employees are white men. Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition praised Apple for releasing the data at the time. Since the release of the statistics, Apple has made workplace diversification a major initiative, coining the “inclusion inspires innovation” tagline which was used by Cook and others to help promote the initiative.
We’ll have to wait and see how Apple’s efforts help make a change.
