• Google Signs Student Privacy Pledge Alongside Apple and Other Tech Giants

Several tech giants including Apple, Microsoft and Google have recently pledged support for a new data privacy initiative aimed at keeping student information safe. The whole situation arose after Google passed on the opportunity to sign on to a student privacy pledge endorsed by President Obama last week. According to The Wall Street Journal, Google changed course and is now part of a list of 91 companies (including Apple) who are supporting the initiative.

The Student Privacy Pledge was introduced last October as a joint project from the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) and the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA). The pledge holds those who signed accountable for a variety of privacy issues facing today’s students including provisions for greater transparency on data collection and use, implementation of comprehensive security standards, set limits on data retention and promises to not sell any information from students.

Before the recent announcement, Google claimed that its internal policies were enough to show that the company was committed to student data privacy. The report takes note that the Internet search giant is likely hesitant to agree to broad industry pledges after being fined $22.5 million by the Federal Trade Commission back in 2012 over cookie-based Web tracking. This particular issue was related to an exploit that was discovered in Apple’s Safari browser.

A Google spokeswoman recently had the following to say regarding the matter:

We've signed the pledge to reaffirm the commitments we've made directly to our customers.
On its behalf, Google promised that its Google Apps for Education program, which has roughly 40 million students, teachers and administrator users, does not and will not implement ads. The Student Privacy Pledge currently has 91 signatories, which cover a variety of companies in the tech sector.

We’ll have to see who else signs on and how everything goes as time progresses.
