• Donít Hold Your Breath for USB 3 on the Mac

If youíve been pining away for USB 3 on the Mac, youíre going to have to wait a little while longer. The rumor mills have been buzzing lately, in anticipation of the arrival of USB 3, but now it seems that Steve Jobs has put an end to all of that. In a recent e-mail to Steve, Tom Kruk asked Appleís top man why it isnít possible to order a Mac with USB 3.0. Jobs, who in recent years has taken to personally responding to customerís e-mails with characteristically short responses, had this to say:

ďWe donít see USB 3 taking off at this time. No support from Intel, for example.Ē

USB 3 is sure to come to the Mac eventually, however, but for now itís sitting on the sidelines with other great technologies such as Blu-ray. USB 3 is fast and would make a natural addition to any future Mac model. With transfer speeds upwards of 3.2 Gbit/sec compared to USB 2ís maximum bandwidth of 480 Mbit/s, itís no wonder people are clamoring for its adoption. Firewire remains a standard on most Macs, but its popularity has been on the decline in recent years. For most users, however, USB 2 will remain the easiest solution for adding peripherals to their computers. So there you have it, from the main man himself. No USB 3 for now at least.
