• Civil Rights Activist and Georgia Congressman John Lewis Meets with Apple CEO Tim Cook

John Lewis, the Georgia congressman and civil rights activist recently spoke at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino California where he discussed his new graphic novel and talked one-on-one with Tim Cook in a closed door meeting. His stop was a part of a Northern California book tour for his book, “March: Book Two,” the second in a planned trilogy of autobiographical graphic novels which focus on the civil rights movement in the United States. Cook ended up tweeting a picture of the two walking through the halls of Apple’s campus in Cupertino.

What remains unclear is the discussion the two had during their private meeting. That being said, the talk comes two months after Cook discussed corporate diversity with prominent civil rights leader, Rev. Jesse Jackson so it is likely something to do with that. For those of you who didn’t already know, Cook has long-admired African-American Civil Rights Movement leader, Martin Luther King Jr. He has even become more vocal regarding equal rights for minorities.

One of the reasons the issue has become such a hot topic is likely because the tech industry is predominantly white, which leads employee diversification and wage gaps as being large issues in the market. Following the lead of various other companies in the Silicon Valley, Apple last year released its first ever report on diversification statistics revealing that most of its employees are white men. Since then, the company seems to have been pushing workplace diversity as a top priority, coining the phrase” inclusion inspires innovation.”

We’ll have to wait and see what comes of the whole ordeal and what step Apple takes next regarding diversification in the workplace.
