• Shuttle Bus Drivers in Bay Area Vote for Teamsters Representation

According to the folks over at The Wall Street Journal a total of 158 bus drivers who work for Compass Transportation, which holds contracts with Apple, eBay, Genentech, Yahoo and Zynga all voted to seek high wagers through the Teamsters representation. The vote saw a final count of 104-38 in favor of joining the union but as of right now must be certified by the National Labor Relations Board.

The Teamsters Local 853 International Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer, Rome Aloise, sad that the drivers “voted be part of a rising tide to improve wages, benefits and working conditions of those who support the tech industry." Rumors of the potential unionization effort surfaced late last month when Compass employees signed union authorization cards – a move which signaled intent to support the initiative.

The recent news comes on the heels of a similar vote involving drivers for Loop Transportation, the firm responsible for operating Facebook shuttles who accepted contract terms, which the Teamsters had negotiated for them as well. Drivers previously made roughly $18 to $20 an hour but the union was able to negotiate terms that brought on more flexible working conditions and raised wages to $24.50 an hour over a three-year period.

For those of you who didn’t know, the issue as a whole became a hot topic in the San Francisco Bay area when the gap between contract workers and the high-income tech employees they serve became better known. According to the publication, skill positions at Silicon Valley companies command a median year salary of about $119,000 while the non-skill jobs rate about $27,000. We’ll have to see how the efforts end up paying off for the contract workers after all is said and done.

Really Modmyi? You use a 2 year old photo that has absolutely nothing to do with teamsters. That photo is from a housing protest over people getting evicted for tech pros to move in. Typical sensationalism. Sad reporting mmi.
