Samsung has scored an important victory over Apple, at least with regard to the first quarter of 2015.
On Wednesday, the venerable research team at Strategy Analytics put out a new report indicating that Samsung has reclaimed the crown of top global smartphone vendor -- a crown donned by Apple in the previous quarterly report.
Global smartphone shipments reached 345 million units in the first quarter of 2015. During that time, Samsung bested Apple to once again become the world's largest smartphone vendor by volume. Here's how the numbers shake out.
"Samsung shipped 83.2 million smartphones worldwide and captured 24 percent marketshare in Q1 2015, dipping from 31 percent a year earlier,' says Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics.
Apple, as we know from Monday's earnings report, shipped 61.2 million smartphones globally and captured 18 percent marketshare in the first three months of 2015.
Whether or not Samsung's lead remains for the next three quarters remains to be seen, as many analysts believe Apple should re-take the crown during the pivotal holiday shopping quarter when Apple will all but certainly have a new iPhone to sell.
