• Apple CEO Tim Cooks Signs Up for Weibo

Just how important is China to Apple? It's so important that Apple'S CEO Tim Cook is becoming more "social" than ever with the vast community of Chinese citizens on Weibo -- the Chinese microblogging juggernaut similar to Twitter.

As of Monday morning, Cook is now an active member of the Weibo community -- a community that consists of some 200 million active monthly users. His first message: “Happy to be back in Beijing, announcing innovative new environmental programs."

Cook shared in the message a link to an Apple press release outlining some of the environmental initiatives the company is actively taking in Asia today.

For Cook, the outlet is an important one. Considering the ban on Twitter and Facebook in China, Weibo is the only channel Cook has for mass communications with the Chinese. And now more than ever, this is exactly what Apple and Cook need to do.

"The news of Cook’s decision to be active on Chinese social media also arrives at the same time as an IDC report which indicates China’s smartphone market is slowing down," TechCrunch notes. "That is, 90% of Chinese already own a smartphone, meaning that Apple will now have to win over those looking to upgrade in order to continue its growth in the region."
