• Apple and IBM Start Rolling Out Apple Watch Support for their MobileFirst Apps

Apple and IBM recently announced Apple Watch support for three MobileFirst apps which aim to serve the healthcare, public safety and energy industries. According to information posted on the Cupertino California company’s mobile enterprise webpage, MobileFirst Apple Watch integration appears to be basic extensions of host iOS apps, which help provide professionals access to both notifications and alerts on-the-go.

The healthcare app, Hospital RN, keeps nurses up to date on patient requests, changes in lab status, safety alerts and task lists by pushing notifications to the Apple Watch. The assumption here is that healthcare professionals will be able to devote more time to patient care and spend less time on their iPhone given that the vital information will all be made accessible at a glance.

The public safety app, Incident Aware, which originally made its debut in December, utilizes a similar push notification feature set that sends urgent alerts to Apple Watch-wearing officials. In this app, the Watch displays a short description of an emergency, the risk level it entails and the current distance to the incident.

Last but not least, Field Connect’s Apple Watch app helps to keep personnel in the energy and utilities industry aware of various adverse working conditions while on the job. For example technicians who work on power lines would get a warning of any high winds in the area, allowing them to better prepare for the situation prior to arriving on location.

As of right now, both Apple and IBM are expected to continue rolling out Apple Watch support across their MobileFirst suite of apps though neither gave an exact availability in terms of a timeline. We’ll have to wait and see but it’s good to see additional support for Apple’s latest device.
