• Path Sells its Flagship Messaging Apps to Korea's Daum Kakao, Places Feature Closing

The smaller and less popular but beautifully designed social network, Path, recently announced the sale of its two flagship mobile apps, Path and Path Talk. The sale is being made to the South Korean messaging company, Daum Kakao, in the process shutting down a major Talk feature called Places. Information regarding the sales wasn’t disclosed but Daum Kakao stated that “nearly everything” in the apps “will remain as is,” but in a separate comment, mentioned that Places is being disabled even though the company is “not currently ready to make the investment” to turn it into a separate app. Since Path is retaining ownership of the places platform, the company may “reassess in the future.”

Previously, people who used Places were able to message local businesses. If a business didn’t have a staff member that was available for a direct conversation, Path itself served as the intermediary.

For those of you who aren’t too familiar with Path, the social network was praised for its design and its user interface but ultimately struggled to build a user base in North America despite being on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. That being said, the app did become popular in several countries in Asia, mainly Indonesia.

Apple was previously rumored to potentially buy Path with a source mentioning that the takeover was “essentially a done deal.” That being said, nothing came to fruition and Apple still hasn’t dipped into any social networking beyond its failed Ping service which closed its door in 2012.

On the other hand, Path has had its fair share of issues as well, coming under fire several times for privacy violations, most famously for uploading iOS contacts without any user permission. Although the company fixed its problems, in 2013, it ended up settling a US Federal Trade investigation for $800,000.

We’ll have to wait and see how the deal turns out for Daum Kakao.
