• Apple Revamps the Games Section of the iOS App Store with a Focus on Curated Lists

The Games section of the iOS App Store seems to have gone through a large overhaul since the middle of May. It now concentrates on curated lists instead of auto-generated sections such as “New” and “What’s Hot.” Instead, Apple has inserted categories that are overseen by the editorial staff such as “Best New Games.” One of the few holdovers from the company’s auto-generated content is “More Games You Might Like,” which as you might have guessed or already know, offers recommendations based on past downloads.

This new approach to the Games section of the App Store also appears to extend to gaming subgenre pages as well, each of which have banner art up top for high-profile apps and distinct curated collections. At the end of the day, these changes are presumably a means of making it easier to find quality games while combating chart manipulation.

Another new approach the Cupertino California company seems to be taking is a new list type labeled “Pay Once & Play,” which helps users avoid the “free-to-play” games which often forced people to make in-app purchases to advance. In the past both parents and government officials have criticized and in some cases sued Apple for failing to close gaps in the App Store’s purchase system, which have been used to dupe children into buying digital content without parental consent.

One of the biggest advantages to the recent change in the App Store is that the changes deter low-quality clone apps since human editors can spot them and keep them out of the spotlight. Previously all an app needed was a basic amount of exposure to pick up downloads and ride algorithms into the featured lists for larger sales.

As of right now, only the US App Store seems to have the changes in place but Apple’s new policies will likely extend to other regions in the near future.
