• WWDC 2015: Apple to Replace Newsstand with a News app in iOS 9

As many were speculating this morning, Apple ended up announcing a new News app as part of iOS 9, one which replaces Newsstand and allows users to have an improved experience when viewing and reading news they care about. The interface for the upcoming News app appears to resemble that of Flipboard and for you designers, youll notice that Apple highlighted rich typography.

The Cupertino California company also showed off the ability for users to pick topics they are interested in and watch how the app propagates content related to those selected topics. For customization options, users can also add specific websites and blogs. The company claims they have worked with a handful of notable publications as well for the new app, using The New York Times as an example, which will be providing News readers with 30 free articles per month, specifically designed for the News app. Others that were mentioned include ESPN and the suite of sources published by Conde Nast such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, GQ and Wired.

At launch, News will be supported in the United States, UK and Australia with more countries rolling out over time.

Apple: We have a good news and a bad news. Good News: We got rid of the Newstand app. Bad News: We are calling it News app.
