• LG Rumored to be Exclusive OLED Supplier for Second-Gen Apple Watch

A recent report out of South Korean claimed that Apple tapped the current Apple Watch plastic OLED supplier, LG Display, to handle panel production for a second-gen model. This new model could supposedly see a release next year according to the reports. The Cupertino California company was originally considered going with multiple suppliers but ultimately chose LG as an exclusive partner for the process due to the firm’s product quality and manufacturing prowess.

In an effort to avoid production delays, Apple is looking to divide component orders between multiple suppliers in an effort to improve manufacturing times but also have a fallback in case any one of the suppliers has any issues. Furthermore, as usual, Apple would be able to leverage competition to keep costs down in this case.

With all of this being said, it should be noted that news from the source should be taken with a grain of salt as MK lacks an established track record when it comes to Apple news. The rumor still appears to make sense as LG’s existing ties with Apple make everything believable. LG is also a major display supplier for various iPad, MacBook and iMac models, which gives some credibility to the rumor.

We’ll have to wait and see if the rumor turns out to be true.
