• Twitter Tinkering with 'Project Lightning'

BuzzFeed broke the news today that Twitter's ultra-secret initiative called "Project Lightning" is moving ahead as planned.

"The new tool will give the company a way to show the best of Twitter to both logged-in and logged-out users on a variety of platforms," says BF's Mat Honan. "It will have instantly loading videos and rich images, and will occupy a front-and-center location in an upcoming version of the Twitter app."

When you consider everything from Twitter's major push into mobile advertising, to its extensive newfound focus on multimedia content, it's clear that the microblogging giant is seeking to breathe new life into a platform that continues to lag Facebook on user engagement and revenue.

The goal of Project Lightning, we're told, is to "bring event-based curated content to the Twitter platform." And although we're still a few months away from launch, the basic premise is now in place.

The biggest noticeable change? "On Twitter’s mobile app, there will be a new button in the center of the home row," BuzzFeed reports, explaining that that those who press the button will then be exposed to a new screen replete with content and key information about events happening and being tweeted about that moment.
