• Apple and Indie Labels Under Merlin and Beggars Group Come to an Agreement

Major Indie music rights holders Merlin Network and Beggars Group have officially signed a contract with Apple Music. According to Billboard, these two holders represent more than 20,000 indie labels and distributors. This news comes just after pop singer Taylor Swift wrote an open letter to Apple saying she was disappointed that Apple did not want to pay artists during the 3-month free trial of Apple Music. Apple’s Eddy Cue then responded soon after changing their decision to pay artists during the free trial time frame. Merlin CEO Charles Caldas stated:

I am pleased to say that Apple has made a decision to pay for all usage of Apple Music under the free trials on a per-play basis, as well as to modify a number of other terms that members had been communicating directly with Apple about," said Merlin CEO Charles Caldas. "With these changes, we are happy to support the deal.
Some artists under British Beggars Group include Arcarde Fire, Adele, and Radiohead, among others and the company has helped artists like M.I.A., Basement Jaxx, and The Prodigy. Last week, Beggars Group released a press release noting that they were dissatisfied with Apple’s decision in not paying their artists during the 90-day free trial period. But as soon as the company reverted their decision in doing so, a deal was signed between Apple and Beggars Group.

We are now just a few days away from the Apple Music launch, will you be signing up? Remember that a single user is just $10/month whereas a family plan is only $5 more at $15/month.
