• Spotify Releases Discovery Weekly, Personalized Curated Playlists for its Users

Spotify recently launched its potential Apple Music curation competitor, Discovery Weekly, a new playlist feature that promises more personalized recommendations for its on-demand streaming service. Unlike most Spotify playlists, which tend to be curated by either users or human editors, Discover Weekly is actually content that is generated automatically according to individual listener habits as well as what other people are choosing in related music. The tracks will be updated weekly on every Monday.

The company ended up noting that the more often someone tunes into Discover Weekly, the more recommendations should improve. The feature, which is available on desktops and on mobile, is another way to solve the problem of content discovery on streaming services. Companies like Spotify, Rdio and Slacker offer tens of millions of songs in their catalogs and often, it can be difficult to help listeners branch out beyond familiar artists or tracks and beyond those shared by friends.

Discover Weekly could potentially be Spotify’s reaction to Apple Music, which launched in June 30. For those of you who are familiar with Apple Music, you’ll recognize that one of the core elements of the service is the “For You” section, which offers up albums and playlists based on earlier Likes and Plays. Similarly, For You is intended to evolve over time. The concept seems to be present in other streaming platforms, including Songza and Apple Music’s predecessor, Beats Music. Spotify appears to be devoting more effort into recommendations in 2015 by adding mood-based playlists for example.

We’ll have to see how the Discovery Weekly addition is received by the general userbase. Have you seen it? What are your thoughts? Share your thoughts and comments below!
