In an effort to find some of its own publicity, Sony recently posted an image on its Xperia Twitter account mocking Apple’s press event. The image read the following “Hey Sony, give us a hint,” with Apple’s Siri-themed event graphic in the background. Below that was a binary code that translated into the words “Game on.”
For those of you who didn’t know, Sony recently announced three Xperia Z5 smartphones, with the main model featuring a 5.2-inch display, 3 GBs of RAM, a fingerprint sensor and a 23-megapixel rear camera. The 5.5-inch Z5 Premium, though, is also being touted as the first smartphone with a 4K display.
As far as Apple’s event goes, the centerpiece of the event is set to be two new iPhones, the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus. These could potentially support 4K video recording thanks to rumored 12-megapixel Sony camera sensors but there is no suggestion of the devices sporting a higher resolution display than what the lineup currently offers, which tops out at 1080p.
Apple is likely going to present new competition for Sony in the form of an updated Appel TV as well. The new Apple TV is set to sport features such as Siri support, an App Store and a touchpad remote. Gaming has also been rumored to be a key feature of the device, which if successful, could hurt sales of Sony’s PlayStation 4 to an extent.
What makes the situation a bit more coincidental and ironic is that Apple’s presentation coincides with the 20th anniversary of the launch of the original PlayStation in North America. Sony and its many fans have been commemorating the occasion with the hashtag #20YearsOfPlay.
Apple’s event is set to take place at 10:00am Pacific/1:00pm Eastern for those of you interested in tuning in! We’ll have to wait and see how Sony and the many other players in the industry react and respond.
