• Apple Reportedly Acquires Mapsense, a Map Data Analytics and Visualization Firm

According to the folks over at Re/code, Apple quietly acquired San Francisco startup, Mapsense, just last week for a reported $25 million to $30 million. This move highlights Apple acquiring yet another firm to a growing arsenal of mapping data intellectual property and personal assets. The acquisition was subsequently confirmed by Apple through its usual boilerplate statement regarding purchases where the company refused to comment on the price of acquisition. The Cupertino California company had the following to say regarding the matter:

Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.
For those of you who didnít know, Mapsense is a relatively new company that was founded by a former Palantir Technologies engineer, Erez Cohen in 2013. According to the companyís website which remains active as of right now, itís cloud-based high-speed mapping system helps provide crucial data analytics and tools for developers. Mapsense claims that customers can upload terabytes of location-tagged data to its service, which then creates a customizable visualization with powerful search and filter tools that help provide easy-to-use analysis.

On its own behalf, Apple has been showing an increased interest in mapping technology over the past few years, more specifically over the last year. During this timeframe, Apple has acquired the crowdsourced map data analytics firm, Locationary; public navigation firm, HopStop; and Coherent Navigation, a company that specializes specifically in accurate GPS hardware and software. These acquisitions are all pointing speculation towards Apple working on a major Maps overhaul or alternatively a self-driving car. Ultimately weíll have to wait and see which it turns out to be.
